Every New Year, people all around the country are hopeful for what the next 12 months will bring them. The New Year is a symbolic time for many to start a new goal, but staying on the path to achieve those goals can be challenging, according to Scott Crockett, Everest Business Funding CEO.
While many people set a New Year’s resolution to improve their lives, many of these goals still need to be met, which leaves people upset. If you want to change your life and improve upon a bad habit, follow these tips to make your New Year’s resolution a success.
Be Specific
Many people make very generic New Year’s resolutions, such as losing weight, living a healthier lifestyle, spending more time with family, or taking up a new hobby. While these are admirable goals, they are harder to achieve because they need to be clearly defined.
One of the best ways to make your New Year’s resolution a success is to be specific with the stated goal. For example, your resolution could be to lose 20 pounds in six months. Or, you could focus on the tasks that get you there rather than the end goal, such as walking three miles three times per week.
Be Realistic
Whenever you’re setting goals, it’s key to make sure they are realistic for you. If you make too lofty resolutions, you could become disheartened if you don’t succeed, leading to you falling off the wagon.
Keep in mind, too, that what’s realistic for you may or may not be realistic for someone else. New Year’s resolutions should be very individual and personal.
Have A Plan
Making a New Year’s resolution is only step one. Having a plan for how you’re going to accomplish that goal is the next step.
Many resolutions require people to adjust their current lifestyle to achieve the goal. Sticking to a lose weight goal, you may need to order food out less, cook more meals, and set aside time to exercise.
How are you going to work this all into your already hectic schedule? Creating a plan will make achieving your goals a lot less stressful and easier to manage.
Track The Progress
One of the biggest factors in whether people are successful at achieving their New Year’s resolution goals is tracking their progress along the way. On the route to achieving your end goal, there will be smaller accomplishments you’ll make.
It’s important to track your progress toward your end goal because that will help you modify your plan, if need be, based on what’s working and what may need to be tweaked. This will empower you to make the change and show you how much you’re accomplishing already.
Celebrate Success
Scott Crockett says that people who are the most effective at achieving New Year’s resolutions are those who celebrate their success — and not just when they reach their final goal. There are going to be plenty of mini-goals along the way that you’re going to accomplish.
Take the time to celebrate those goals, and reward yourself for accomplishing them. That will help you stay motivated and realize just how far you’ve come.
